3D street art by Francois Abelanet

When you know that this 3D piece covers an area of over 400 square meters, you have to appreciate the effort. And when it looks as striking as this you just bow to the artist’s talent – Francois Abelanet. This piece is located in Lyon and has been commissioned to showcase the latest range of Renault trucks.

Shintaro Ohata – the sculptor painter

Shintaro Ohata is one of these artists who will show you something new, who will inspire you, either through a raw and obvious talent or/and because something gets taken to the next level, high, so high it is not reachable by the common creative soul.

Painting meets sculpture or is it rather sculpture redefines painting, I am actually not sure. I am looking at Shintaro Ohata’s works with interest. I then learn that the sculpture elements in his work are actually made of polystyrene and the actual painting is mainly made of acrylic.

This series of works depicts every day scenes of people going about their business but these become much more than that under the artist’s direction. The 3D effect that is created by the sculpted elements, mainly humans or animals, is disconcerting and confuse you as to what you are looking at – a sculpture with a painted background or a painting which includes a sculpture element.

The fusion of the two mediums is pretty remarkable here. Kneel down and look straight and you might not realise that there is a sculpture element, so much so that painting and sculpture elements are binding each other but take a few steps back and the 3D angle is now clear and the artwork has got a completely different feel to it.

We cannot wait for Shintaro Ohata to have a show in London

Shepard Fairey’s NSA themed Obama posters

Shepard Fairey’s face must have dropped when he saw these “Yes we scan” posters which are a “remix” of his now iconic “Hope” pieece for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. Yesterday he was the one using a photograph without permission, which got him into  a legal battle and a $25,000 fine, but today it looks like someone is doing just the same.

We hear that Shepard Fairey likes the posters a lot and that he will not start any legal proceedings. We agree too, e thing they are great posters with a straight to the point slogan. What do you think?

The posters features the slogan “Yes We Scan,” a parody of Obama’s “Yes We Can” rallying cry, and an image of the president wearing headphones, presumably to listen in on average Americans’ phone calls.

“Subversion of well known symbols and images for social commentary has long been a technique in my repertoire, so I’m glad to see it in the work of others,”  Fairey said
