Drones in Deptford coming soon

Silent RunningWe all like going to the movies, don’t we? But how about going to the movies and get a total immersion in it, how about an invasion by spaceships and robots whilst watching the 1972 eco-themed sci-fi classic Silent Running?

Immersive cinema company The Vanishing Point is throwing another mighty sounding event in association with nationwide film season Scala Beyond.  The venue is the Utrophia Gallery in Deptford – a space which, conveniently, is already well equipped with rooftop machinery, and the feel of a ‘run down old spaceship’, according to Paul Reed, The Vanishing Pointco-founder and creative director.

From Paul Reed,

‘We don’t want to create a nostalgic reaction of the film but look at the themes, what was it getting at and how can we have some fun with that and keep people interested and excited.

The event will feature interaction with crew members from The Valley Forge space freighter, garden areas, a blast-off bar, food stalls and immersive installations inspired by the fiction of the film. We also hear that there will also be a retro video game installation.

The Vanishing Point Silent Running Screening takes place on 15 September at Utrophia (Rooftop screening), 120 Deptford High Street, London, SE8. For tickets and more information visit www.thevanishingpoint.org.uk

TRXTR new show "Lucked Up" at Get Up gallery

TRXTR | Art-PieUK based artist TRXTR has a new show but this time in the United States and precisely in Las Vegas. The artist’s work touches on social and moral issues. TRXTR is true ti his style where photography is cleverly mixed with painting through a bunch of techniques

It is difficult not to feel anything when looking at the artist’s work –  his work is often disturbing or disconcerting which makes atmospheres transpire to which the viewers ultimately react to it.

From the gallery “Concerns about exploitation, globalization and corruption appear over and over again, but the tone is ambivalent. He is not preaching to us, but reproducing some of the sickly sweet images of commercialism in a way that it is genuinely hard to tell if he is celebrating them or railing against them.”

From the artist “The luck of being born pretty, rich, handsome, gifted and in the majority is real luck in this world. For the rest there is Vegas and its clones where in the nano second before you’re screwed you can imagine what it’s like to be in the one percent.”

There is a twist at the opening  night, TRXTR tells us about it – all purchases made inside of Get Up Gallery will be eligible for the “Fifty Buck Chuck” promotion. Each purchaser will get a chance to roll a dice. The number that is rolled will be multiplied by $50, and the discount will be applied to the piece purchased. This opportunity to save up to $300 will only be available on the evening of the opening.

Star Wars characters does the Eighties style

Artist Denis Medri gives us his vision on how would several Star Wars characters look like if they were from the Eighties. This series is awesome and Denis, beyond is obvious pencil drawing skills, managed to cleverly transpose two worlds miles apart.

Have a look at the pictures below along with the artist’s comments –

“of course Luke is inspired by Marty McFly form Back to the Future… Leila is the classic 80’s chick…”

“Here is Han and Chewbie ,and the Millenium Falcon/Trans AM”

“Of course in this new re-design the Droids have to be the classic Nerds… is R2-D2 the East European nerd student that made an experience in USA of course only C-3PO understand his words..”

“Yoda is the old sage asian Coach, and Kenobi is the kind history & Literature’s teacher…”

“In this my new version of SW , Vader isn’t the Luke’s father, but is the classic bullit of the High School, that try to bring Luke to the “dark side” and been bullit too.. He is the “chief “of a motocross crew of bullit ( like “Karate Kid” or “Lost Kids”) He wear a jacket like Micheal jackson on “Thriller” in a total black look Boba Fett is his “sidekick” wearing his classic 80’s glasses and we have 2 twins that look like Trooper”s style.”

“Palpatine is the evil Principal, Jabba the fat bastard Janitor and Tarkin the severe Mathematic-Science’s teacher”

El-Seed paints the Jara mosque

Tunisia has been the stage lately of a surge of intolerability towards creativity and especially towards anything to do with a spray can. As a result, the French-born Tunisian graffiti artist El-Seed took action.

El Seed - Jara mosque | Art-PieThe result is Tunisia’s largest mural but what matters above all is the the location; he painted on the country’s tallest minaret, at the Jara Mosque, located in the industrial city of Gabes. Pictures after the fold.

Here is what El-seed says about the project “I decided to do the mural because it was close to my heart. It had been a while I had wanted to paint a wall in Gabes,” the artist told Ahram Online.

“The primary purpose was, and is, to inspire people to get together and build community around positive action,” El-Seed told Ahram Online via email. “

The mural, which has been embraced with open arms by the mosque’s Imam, was painted on the 57-metre high minaret, and is meant as a message of tolerance and mutual respect.

El-Seed got interestd in the art of graffiti back in 1998 in Paris, where he spent his childhood. Later, when he moved to North America, he started combining graffiti with his passion for Arabic calligraphy (usually associated with the Quran and religious scripture). The artist likes to mix traditional script and contemporary pop-culture, giving birth to a distinctive urban graffiti.
