Gordon Cheung at Room: multi media artist

I always find fascinating when an artist can juggle between medias or techniques, when artists can be as varied as Gordon Cheung is. It is definitely a sign of open mindedness and in this case also talent.

Pyrographics, spray paint, oil, acrylics, sculpture, animation… Gordon Cheung seems to explore everything in is art. THE JOURNEY (ink, acrylic gel and spray paint on canvas), BEAR and BULL (both being acrylic gel and spray on canvases) are definitely my favorite pieces. Acrylic gel is superb to get incredible texture and relief.

There is clearly a sense of surreal in Gordon Cheung’s work and definitely the very personal vision of one man on contemporary issues such as the war on terror, religion, economics, globalisation, the digital age and technology.

I have not mentioned so far the pyrographics (amazingly detailed) or THE CONQUEROR, a set of 4 sculptures including a human spine or even THE ALCHEMIST, cast of a bull skull and a bear jaw – I just did not get it and just thought for a moment that I was in a Science Museum.

A must-see exhibition (running until the 31st of January at Room) from a visionary artist where medias and techniques are mastered in a way you may have not come across yet.

Also check out one of the ‘Four Riders’ animations – pretty hypnotic!
