Word To Mother at Stolen Space

StolenSpace is proud to present Word To Mother’s fifth solo show with us, entitled ‘Essence Of Adolescence’ featuring a new body of mixed media paintings on wooden panels.

‘Essence of Adolescence’ is an enlightening glimpse into the artist’s visually obsessed mind. Word To Mother invites the viewer to take a glimpse of his inner mindscape. An outward manifestation that combines references drawn from his childhood and the visual stimulation that he absorbed; cartoons juxtaposed with more serious emotive thoughts and fears that face him as an adult living and painting in East London.

Incorporating hand drawn personal sentiments, emotions and feelings that he executes in the form ofloose script, inspired from his experience as a tattoo artist and tight sign written letters, drawn from years of painting graffiti. A beautiful juxtaposition, of fragile and emotive elements shown through subtle textures and washes of colour, but with a strength and confidence fused with his signature patterns, architecture & figures, this body of work is melancholic yet fun and playful.

With anearthy ‘London’ palette of grey tones excentuating splashes of brighter ‘seaside’ colours of fluro red, pink, yellows and turquoise which give the paintings an optimistic feel. Word To Mother draws inspiration from an adolscence which holds precious memories, juxtaposed with an adulthood which has made him the talented artist he is today.

Dale Grimshaw at Signal gallery

Dale Grimshaw has got a fine art education which meant that he has been difficult for him to be accepted in the streets as a graffiti artist but long ago was that time, Dale Grimshaw seems to plain sailing his style, his own.

His new show, Semi-detached is the expression of monsters and victims, making reference here to his violent father and the tensions this created in the household. Dale Grimshaw are full of that tension, the whole composition and combination of human and animal gives the tone of what it must have be like at home.

Rowena Hughes at Room

PV  Wednesday 7/9  6.00-8.00PM | Show:  8/9 till 15/10/2011

Rowena Hughes works with the layering of abstract form and photographic imagery from discarded books, drawing or screen-printing a recurring vocabulary of geometric form often based on Roger Penrose’s complex non-repeating patterns onto images of baroque architecture or the natural world. The element of chance in the printed compositions exploits the interplay between the intentional and the accidental, the ideal abstract rational order of mathematics and the evocative uncertainty of the found book pages.

ROWENA HUGHES recently graduated from the Slade MFA. Her work was selected for New Contemporaries at A Foundation, Liverpool and the ICA, London as well as being included in the group exhibitions at Rod Barton, Arcade and FAS Contemporary. Hughes was named in the Independent as one of the ten most interesting artists to graduate in 2011.
