BRP PAPER at Black Rat Press

Preview evening at Black Rat Projects, Thursday 8/09/2011, 6-9pm. The show then will run until the 16th October 2011.

Light as a feather yet inscribed with the heavy history of stories told, the blank page has long since lost its primary function: once instrumental for the post-enlightenment dissemination of information in the name of democratised knowledge, paper is now that detritus of the digital age. Just as painters, in the advent of the camera, sought experimental ways of reclaiming a trade absolved of all social utility, so today’s artists turn to this generation’s redundant material as a site of creative possibility.
In September 2011, Black Rat Projects offers a means of ingress into a field of art-making which presents a unique response to our contemporary situation. BRP PAPER ties Brian Douglas, Swoon, Leipzig based Annette Schröter, Polish artist Jarek Piotrowski, Armenian born Karen Sargsyan, Alex James Daw and Atlanta based Brian Dettmer through their common practice: the manipulation of paper. These are the artists who stand at the threshold of post-production practices and yet their aesthetic constructs Romantic landscapes and strives for a beauty long discarded by the history of art.
As they tear, rip, dye, cut, fold, recycle, trash, sew, stain, stick, mould, slice, slash, copy and paste their work into being, a narrative of materiality emerges that finds a unity between the post-punk adage and the ancient skilled crafts of origami and shadow puppetry. Labour intensive, their paper works create an opening where the sublime intentions of modernist painting meet the social pragmatism mobilised by the modern DIY spirit.
As all that was paper melts into data Black Rat Projects brings these international artists together for the first time to explore common themes in their work.

Greg Miller at Scream

Opening reception: Thursday 1st September 6.30 – 8.30 pm

Scream gallery will soon host Greg Miller’s first solo UK exhibition. The large-scale works artist will again use his creativity using collages.

His style is very much pop art-inspired paintings and his “Phantom Lady” got noticed this year at an Bonhams urban art sale earlier this year. See picture below.

Pure Evil at XOYO

Andy Warhol’s famous dictum that “Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.” in an age of media and internet saturation sounds less like an off hand quip and more a prescient statement of fact.. It is fitting then that the inspiration for the series of darkly reductive artworks created by artist Pure Evil that make up the core of the Last Good Time show was an email full of thumbnail images received from a Chinese company specializing in the reproduction of the classic canon of western artwork, produced by an entire copy village indifferently mass producing Rembrandts and Warhols .

From this spark came further artworks in a series built on the idea of the tragic muse, the ‘POP’ combustibility of creative relationships and the dark side of the classic glamour of the age prior to tabloid overload, seen through the ghostly tear filled eyes of Elizabeth Taylor, Li Tobler, Sylvette Davide or Brigitte Bardot.

EAGLE by Dave White – print release

One launch night not to miss, one print to get.

The artist, Dave White is on the rise and have been selected for the Northern Graduates show at the Royal College of Art, Liverpool-based. He is regarded by many as one of the most talented of the UK’s new generation of painters and when you see what he is done, you have to agree or at least positively nod.

The event is about the release of an exclusive limited edition print, hand finished in gold leaf, of his iconic Eagle work from his critically acclaimed Americana series.
