Fran Williams – contemporary artist who marks

We have had the chance to ask a few questions to Fran Williams

ART-PIE:Tell us about yourself in a few words?
FRAN WILLIAMS: I explore the process and of paint and its emotional impact through mark making. Using the human form as a vehicle to create emotion with paint.

A-P: What is your process/approach when making art?
FW: My process is one of discovery through continual manipulation of paint and surface…throughout the smudging and hacking away of paint I get an idea of the ‘personality’ of a potential painting before choosing a pose which I feel will bring a readable emotion to it.Its all about the overall energy a of a painting…detail and meaning are secondary whilst Im creating it… the titles and meaning I attach afterwards come from things I have been thinking about outside of the studio.

A-P: Where/what do you look for inspiration?
FW: Everything everywhere is inspiring in one way or another…the changabilty of the sky is something Im inspired by all day…its a continual reminder of the impermanence of any experience which is something I find very useful should I ever have doubts on whether I could /should do something…it reminds me to just do it, and enjoy the journey.

In terms of artistic fuel Im always looking at the art of the Symbolist Painters such as Odilon Redon and Jean Delville…aswell as contemporary and mixed media artists such as Celia Paul and Dave Mckean.

ART MOSH

The latest NIXON ART MOSH event just happened in Munich and the works exhibited on this occasion again look top quality. See the video they put together about the show.

I had the chance to attend the last NIXON ART MOSH held in London last year and I did not get disappointed but rather amazed. The venue, Rochelle School was one of the best venue I have seen for art shows – set on two levels, airy and large.

Beyond the excellent choice of venues, ART MOSH is all about getting a mix of artists and talents from various medias and they do it rather well – painting, photography, design, sculpture, music and street art, there is something for everyone. Regular artists include names like Dan Baldwin, Jaybo Monk or Faith47

NIXON ART MOSH shows are as eclectic as the bunch of artists and people attending the event. Once night only but what a night. I cannot wait for the next show in London.

The Unknown Room at Red gallery

We managed to get a glimpse of The Unknown Room at Red gallery. This installation was put together to coincide with Close Eyes to Exit, an exhibition at Red Gallery in London (2nd – 18th April) which celebrates the launch of the fifth issue of LE GUN as well as number 6 of its sister publication: BARE BONES.

Le Gun and Bare Bones are two independently published paper funded entirely by its contributors. No editorial or commercial restraints, you and I with ideas can contribute and your work may get featured in their next show.

The Unknown Room stands right in a middle of the first room on the right when you get into the gallery and you get thge feeling that you are up for some bizarre and quirkiness but this would not surprise RED gallery regulars.

Luckily, a massive help to understand what you are looking at is right there on the wall – the briefcase of a certain George Melly was randomly find in a basement and its contents were right there on display. No more needed to be said, a quick spin round and I was looking at my first skull and tramp juice bottle.

Jaybo Monk – I need a dollar

This is this kind of event which propels creativity to the next level, this is when a collaborative effort becomes Art.

American R&B artist Aloe Blacc, musician and music-maker Mihalj “Miki” Kekenj and artist Jaybo got together and put on a what have been an amazing night at Berlin’s creative space MADE.

Aloe Blacc´s original music was interpreted by Miki and his string-quintet which transformed the soul and funk style of Aloe into classical music compositions. Jaybo got involved and took his inspiration from the lyrics of Aloe’s song “I Need a Dollar”and converted it into his own visual interpreation – one of the best piece of art I have seen so far this year!

Jaybo’s painting was put on dispolay for the first time during the event at MADE where Aloe and Miki’s quintet performed a bunch of aloe’s repertoire. The film below shows this performance and tell us about the project.

Hats off to MADE for pulling such a great show where great talents from different art disciplines get together for everybody’s delight.

Miss Van – Twinkles at Magda Danysz Gallery

One of the first stops on our European tour is Paris, France.

We spent the first day just walking the streets taking as many shots as we could of the amazing amount of street art. On the second day we made way to the Magda danysz Gallery to check out the latest show from Miss Van entitled ”Twinkles”.

The gallery is a huge space, set over two floors with a series of stretching white wall.We are familiar with Miss Van’s colourful street work featuring her trademark female figures. This show was a step in sightly different direction with the ground floor focusing on a series of works with a distinct Victorian feel, dark tones set in very heavy wooden frames.

The first floor has a carnival theme, still darker imagery yet a little more colour than the works you see on other floors. Some other reviews have pointed out that the difference in themes is due to the fact that the body of work is combination of paintings from earlier shows mixed with some later works.
This didn’t bother us, as this was the first show from Miss Van that were able to see, we enjoyed seeing the progression of themes over a few years work.

This show is very enjoyable, if not slightly dwarfed by the sheer size of the gallery, yet well worth checking out.

The show runs until the 30/4/2011
