‘History’ – portraits from Adam Neate at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms

As I am reading the press release of History – Adam Neate. Portraits from 2006 -2013, I remember that last time I got that excited by a show about portraits was when I went to see Joram Roukes at Signal gallery.

Adam Neate (as much as Joram Roukes) is the sort of artists that will challenge whatever perception of portraiture in art you might have by giving you something radically different to look at. Do not look for resemblance  in Adam’s work, his portraits are more expressions of characters in their social environments but what makes his work unique is the mediums he uses – Perspex, metal, fabrics, lenticulars and film.

Neate’s subject matter is in the strong British tradition of social realism, yet the materials he uses to make his brush strokes challenge tradition. In his iconic portraits, as well as in his portrayals of domestic life, the self-taught artist continues to push boundaries and challenge himself. Neate wrestles with new ideas in painting while working through the powerful emotions that are ever present in his overtly personal work.” Elms Lesters Painting Rooms.

Fragile, a new show by Dan Baldwin at Gallery 8

We have had to wait for three years but it is now upon us – “Fragile”, the new solo show by Dan Baldwin is opening tomorrow to the publich at Gallery 8. We hear that the artist will explore the concepts of mortality and beauty. As always, the new works by Dan Baldwin promise to be distinctively colourful defying categorisation as figurative or abstract, real or imaginary.

For those not so familiar with Dan Baldwin’s works, expect encompassing ceramics, silkscreen prints, resin, acrylics, spray paint and found objects carefully mixed together and resulting in complex and intricate pieces. It is also worth to point out that most of the objects in his uses have been collected since he was a child.

The show will present another set of large-scale acrylic works where the artist continue the exploration of symbolism and narrative. By contrast, the artist has also developed a series of abstract canvasses which are devoid of any motifs but instead explore further his fascination with colour harmony. In comparison to others in the exhibition, these works evoke a positive response in the viewer but still ask us to consider the uncertain and short-lived nature of human happiness.

A large proportion of the show will be dedicated to a series of delicate ceramics, a medium with which the artist has started to experiment further in recent years. Now working with a Sicilian pottery workshop, the artist is creating increasingly elaborate urn-like vessels which are representative of death and the fleeting nature of our existence. The most ambitious to date is perhaps “Sacrilegium” (2013) which is adorned with a real human skull cast in clay as well as 20% pure gold paint, crucifix, cherubs and an antique Russian bear figurine. These motifs increase the funerary connotations of the object, making it appear fragile in more ways than one.

But Dan Baldwin’s exploration of new mediums in his art does not stop here. He has also developed a series of large-scale tile paintings for the exhibition. “The Picnic” (2012), for example, is made up of 96 tiles overlaid with several glazes and precious metals. The dreamlike scene is filled with juxtapositions of life and death, innocence and corruption; children play with a severed head whilst Mickey Mouse dances with a skeleton. In a final act of ‘iconoclasm’ the artist smashed the tiles before assembling them, to demonstrate their fragility

Under her skin: female tattoo culture at Atomica gallery

Under her skin at Atomica gallery | Art-PieAtomica Gallery is delighted to announce their first exhibition of original artwork: Under Her Skin, in association with Things&Ink, the magazine embracing female tattoo culture.

Celebrating the magazine’s first anniversary and launch of the new issue The Art Issue, the exhibition is curated by Things&Ink and will include work from twelve female tattoo artists who have featured in the magazine’s pages over the past year.

Founded by journalist and tattoo enthusiast Alice Snape in 2012, Things&Ink magazine reflects on tattoo culture from a feminine perspective. Differing from traditional, often male dominated tattoo media, the publication is both beautiful and thought-provoking and has fast become a collector’s item.

Under Her Skin marks one year of Things&Ink by bringing together a selection of today’s most talented artists for an exhibition celebrating modern female tattoo culture:

Amy Victoria Savage (Jayne Doe, Hornchurch UK) | Angelique Houtkamp (Salon Serpent, Amsterdam NL) | Charissa Gregson (Jolie Rouge, London UK) | Dominique Holmes (The Family Business, London UK) | Grace Neutral (Good Times, London UK) | Guen Douglas (Salon Serpent, Amsterdam NL) | Iris Lys (London UK & Paris FR) | Lucy Pryor (Into You, London UK) | Rachel Baldwin (Bold As Brass, Liverpool UK) | Rebecca Vincent (Nostalgia Traditional Tattooing, Leeds & The Circle, London UK) | Tracy D (King’s Cross Tattoo Parlour, London UK) | Vicky Morgan (Ghost House, Derby UK)

Stay tunes for exclusive pics .

From the gallery
Working across all mediums, scale plays an important part in his work – he has a fondness for epic street pieces, with his monstrous creations seen on walls ranging from 20ft to over 100 ft. Light and the effects of light are also another huge aspect of his work, using this technique to give life to a varied range of compositions.

We have also included a video about the artist telling you a big more about the artist
