Spaces Within Spaces Within Space Within at Pure Evil gallery

Pure Evil galleryDespite the marked differences between their graphic and visual languages, long-time friends Paulo Arraiano (yup) and Diogo Machado (add fuel to the fire) have often collaborated on many projects. Over the years each has developed an extensive portfolio in the fields of graphic and visual arts, working in a variety of mediums. Each has also taken part in a great number of individual and collective exhibitions, in Portugal and abroad. This is the first time they are showcasing their work together in the UK.

Both grew up in and live in the seaside town of Cascais, outside Lisbon, Portugal, and in spite of their distinctive paths they share multiple references and interests. They have developed a high level of understanding and familiarity which often borders on the complicit, turning their fertile partnership into an ongoing intuitive collaboration. It is this convergence towards a mutual space where both their differences and similarities intersect that can be viewed here.

Spaces Within explores this point of contact where the two individual realms meet and overlap ≠ an area which both re˛ects and transcends the many inner spaces and territories their lives and work have created; a new multi-layered expanse composed of myriad emotions, characters, stories, landscapes, colours, shapes and details.

David Spiller at Beaux Arts London

Look at any painting by David Spiller and it is almost impossible not to smile. Light-heartedly optimistic, he uses Pop culture as part of a broader celebration to ‘make the painting live’.

Beaux Arts is pleased to present an upcoming solo show with 25 new works in which Spiller starts to move away from bold unabashed col- our towards a more reflective and elusive style of painting.

He has certainly not lost the magic. His works hit you like a wave of bright sincerity at a time when complexity in art – in an art world that all too often values the shocking and the nihilistic above all else – has become the end-goal. In whichever case, as Edward Lucie-Smith wrote in 2004, ‘These are good paintings – but they are also fun. How often nowadays do we have real fun in an art gallery?’

Spiller’s work has received a huge following and is exhibited constantly throughout Europe and the US.

Hayley Lock at Transition gallery

Launched at Ickworth House in Suffolk in July 2011 (Now that would be) Telling is a collaborative project between the artist Hayley Lock, curator Catherine Hemelryk and writers Jessica Hart, Lucinda Hawksley, Ben Moor, Hallie Rubenhold and Liz Williams.

Lock and the writers have created a series of site-specific works in English stately homes. Part myth and part encrypted biography, these works reveal/conceal parallel histories of the residents of these remarkable homes.

For Transition Gallery Lock is showing a series of works originally made for a grand home proudly situated in rural Bedfordshire. These portraits of the real and imagined lovers of the Lady of the House use mirrors and light to form a multiple of 28 and include a new portrait of the Lady herself. Lock meshes a range of sumptuous materials including velvets, brocades gilt and fringing into the portraits referencing the imagined interiors of Caddington Hall the family house. Elsewhere the digitally enhanced landscapes play out their stories of love, romance and deceit in an uncanny space where truth and fiction, history and scandal collide.
