This exhibition aims to show Chila Kumari Burman’s work from 2000 to the present. For more than twenty five years Chila has been creating powerful images of contemporary Asian Feminisms.

Born in Liverpool to a Hindu Punjabi family Chila’s art explores issues of class, gender, ethnicity, identity – but through the prism of defiance and love. Her work is informed by popular culture, Bollywood, fashion, found objects and a long-sustained examination of self-portraiture.

The exhibition will showcase a dazzling array of media:  printmaking, collage, mixed media, photography, sculpture and painting. Through all of these media Chila’s aim remains steady: the provocative undermining of fixed categories.

The Regent's canal art festival

Regent's canal festivalI like walking down the Regent’s canal, just for a stroll but also to spot street art. Many famous street or graffiti artists such as Banksky or Team Robbo have let their spray cans go wild on the walls of the surrounding buildings or bridges along the path.

Come to the canal this summer and get away from the Olympics madness and enjoy art, from performances, visual art to music. The Regent’s canal festival will be held from the 13 to the 15th July 2012. The submissions are being taken right now and until the 10th June 2012 so hurry and get this once in a lifetime opportunity.

“Regent’s Canal Festival celebrates the 200th anniversary of the formation of the Canal, while engaging local communities provides an excellent platform to deliver a wide range of artistic disciplines – such as audiovisuals, performances, visual arts, live experiences, events and music.

The Regent’s Canal Festival is taking place alongside the canal, crossing boroughs from Little Venice to Limehouse Basin. The Festival will be transforming the Regent’s Canal into an artistic and cultural hub raising awareness of environmental issues through the arts.

In order to create this, we are looking for art works that thematically fits our artistic vision, enhancing the look and feel of being surrounded by water.

The pieces may be interactive or purely visual spectacles, they can potentially incorporate elements of water or fire but they must be relatively durable and suitable for all weather conditions. Floating and light sculptures are particularly welcome.”

Sugar For My Soul and The Circle celebrate the superstitions, history and mystery of Friday 13th with a limited edition print exhibition.

An exhibition like no other in London’s Soho district, each of the superstitious 13 artists will produce a limited print run inspired by Friday 13th with only 13 editions.

Curated by Sugar For My Soul this must see collection is open to the public for 13 days from Friday 13th May until Wednesday 25th May 2016.

Ryo Sanada and Suridh Hassan of Studio Rarekind (SRK) specialise in the promotion of international culture and music through documentary production and film. Their documentary film on Japanese Hip-Hop culture – “Scratching the surface: Japan” – has been broadcast Europe. This was followed by successful screenings at the 12th Raindance Film Festival in London and Vancouver International Hip-Hop Film Festival.

Otto Schade at Frameless gallery

Otto Schade - Frameless gallery | Art-PieIt was lunch time and I was again walking towards the place that would put an end to the hunger I had been victim off all morning.

I then once again walked past the Frameless gallery in Farringdon which I had never bothered to visit until today.

I certainly knew about it but either the thought of a mighty sandwich (I work really nearby) or a recurrent weak interest in what I could glance at, had always been dragging me away from it. Not today. Otto Schade’s show – Street art Olympics, was on.

It really adds a dimension to any show when the artist paints something onto the front of the building where his/her show is held at and Otto Schade just did that.

The one who knows Otto Schade’s works will recognise this familiar face – see picture.  (more pictures after the fold)

There is a clear Olympics theme for the pieces on canvases that can be seen in the first part of the show (upstairs that is – it is worth to point out that I was not aware of the downstairs bit of the gallery which adds so much to the whole space and make it one of the best venues I have been in recent months).

Next to those, sit a series of more traditional prints.

Otto Schade - frameless gallery | Art-PieThe earthy colors scheme used for the Olympics themed pieces which are all on a black background gives them a very warm feel whilst the black – red – white scheme used for the prints does the opposite and seems to freeze the image.

Head downstairs and find a variety of other pieces from Otto Schade from portraits of the Queen Elizabeth to the representation of a panda which seems to have found a ball to play with. It was hard to find an obvious link with the Olympics here – let me point out that the show is called “Street art Olympics”.

And there I saw it, I saw the piece I want to own: a make over of the Queen of Diamonds playing card by Otto Schade. The colors work so well, the intensity of this piece obtained by hiding the face of the character is intense and seductive.

Joan Miro at Andipa gallery

Andipa Gallery is delighted to announce a selling exhibition of unique works and rare graphics by Joan Miro.

Taking place from 7 April to 7 May 2011 the show coincides with the first major London retrospective of Miro’s work for almost 50 years, The Ladder of Escape at the Tate Modern, and will offer a rare opportunity to acquire some of the finest original works by this master of 20th Century art.

The exhibition will show rare works on paper, including some of Miro’s 1965 Le Courtisan Grotesque series. Works described as displaying “the most genuine Miro, the one of the astral signs (and) symbolic objects… who uses his own mature language, without hesitations.” Daniel Giralt-Miracle (art critic and historian).

Miro’s most iconic and admired engravings, lithography and etchings will also be on display. Pieces will include the original lithograph Montroig 2, named after the Catalan village to which Miro felt a deep connection, returning to throughout his life, and which inspired some of his most seminal works. These highly sought after brightly coloured pieces make up an integral part of the artist’s oeuvre and demonstrate Miro’s expert use of carborundum to produce richly textural pieces that reflect the original qualities of painting.

Miro was among the most prominent of modern artists, developing a unique Surrealist language that expressed freedom and energy through its fantastical imagery, vibrant use of colour and free use of paint, often splattered across his canvases creating an explosive effect. The more political side to Miro’s work reflects the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War and repression under the Franco regime. His works express and react to conflict, protest and political upheaval. In our current instable and uncertain times, perhaps this more restless and anxious aspect of Miro’s practice is at its most resonant.
