If a hot summer was not enough to enjoy London this summer, Hang Up Pictures gallery in Stoke Newington is throwing a ten week festival of art and entertainment. And if you know and like Mark Powell work, read on…

To celebrate our tenth anniversary, this summer, we will be launching Hang-Ten; a ten week festival of art and entertainment. This includes a multimedia group exhibition, exclusive limited releases, a packed events calendar of talks and workshops, and of course, one huge party with free giveaways, music, food and drinks.

The next event taking place is Mark Powell Live Drawing Session | Sat 21 July, 12 – 4pm and you would not want to miss that, especially if you are a fan, as he is, of Mark Powell Bic Biro drawings.

Mark Powell will draw live at Hang-Up gallery on 21 July for what is set to be a fantastic afternoon. We also hear that there will be an exclusive limited edition print available at 50% off for the first 20 people through the door…

Jaybo Monk – I need a dollar

This is this kind of event which propels creativity to the next level, this is when a collaborative effort becomes Art.

American R&B artist Aloe Blacc, musician and music-maker Mihalj “Miki” Kekenj and artist Jaybo got together and put on a what have been an amazing night at Berlin’s creative space MADE.

Aloe Blacc´s original music was interpreted by Miki and his string-quintet which transformed the soul and funk style of Aloe into classical music compositions. Jaybo got involved and took his inspiration from the lyrics of Aloe’s song “I Need a Dollar”and converted it into his own visual interpreation – one of the best piece of art I have seen so far this year!

Jaybo’s painting was put on dispolay for the first time during the event at MADE where Aloe and Miki’s quintet performed a bunch of aloe’s repertoire. The film below shows this performance and tell us about the project.

Hats off to MADE for pulling such a great show where great talents from different art disciplines get together for everybody’s delight.

A glow in the dark skate park

We all like when art means having fun, don’t we? How about then if you could skateboard on a sculpture and even better glow-in-the-dark skate park? Yes you would or at least you would support the concept.

The concept is out there in fact and in France precisely. Korean artist Koo Jeong-A has come up with a solution. The structure is called Otro, and is made from green phosphorescent concrete (how cool is that) so it gives off a radioactive glare at night. It is composed of different bowls, a cradle and three tunnels. See pictures below.

Koo Jeong-A invites anyone to share the physical and sensorial experience of her sculpture/skatepark. With OTRO, Koo Jeong-A tries out the fragile visibility of the artwork, its discrete appearance that tests our perception, obliging you to discover with patience the artwork’s essence. So if you are on holiday in France near Limoges, make a stop for Otro, you’ll like it.

Gordon Cheung at Room: multi media artist

I always find fascinating when an artist can juggle between medias or techniques, when artists can be as varied as Gordon Cheung is. It is definitely a sign of open mindedness and in this case also talent.

Pyrographics, spray paint, oil, acrylics, sculpture, animation… Gordon Cheung seems to explore everything in is art. THE JOURNEY (ink, acrylic gel and spray paint on canvas), BEAR and BULL (both being acrylic gel and spray on canvases) are definitely my favorite pieces. Team Robbo’s wonders on Holloway Road

I cannot believe I had forgotten about this huge wall on Holloway Road. I went past it a few weeks ago but could not stop to take pictures. I have done so today. Enjoy the pictures below.

At the time where I am writing this, I hear some people on Twitter expressing their surprise about Robbo doing stencils ( I myself spotted a few weeks ago a stencil signed Robbo). Some people seem to find inconceivable that idea?

Woo, woo, woo, let’s all calm down here. Robbo will still be king should he starts stenciling our streets and if he stencils as good as he drops graffiti, I cannot wait to see more of it around London. Stenciling is not Evil, stenciling is not cheating, stenciling is just a different form of street art.

ArtiLinki – next meet up on the 21st feb – London

We have recently partnered with ArtiLink, a young business who has created a social network dedicated to artists from all kind of artistic fields, creative professionals or cultural structures. Their website offers them one more visibility solution for free and it is also possible to buy a premium account to increase his visibility. Artists can put all the medium they want on their profiles and their actualities, and follow the people or structures they like to be informed of their projects.

From Charlotte Canario, artistic creation – “Our goal is to create links between arts, people and their different activities, that is why we organize meetings each month in Lyon since a year and a half where people can gather them, bring their books and share about their projects, in a convivial way !”

The meeting begins usually at 19 pm and ends around 23 pm. The first part of the meeting is for networking, then a second part is dedicated to a showcases, where 5 or 6 people (artists, associations, musicians…etc.) come to present their work to the gathering. It can take the form of a concert, a performance, a PowerPoint presentation, a dance show… We try to mix as most as possible the fields of intervention!

The first ArtLinki meet up of 2013 is this Thursday 21st February and is taking place at StrongRooms and what a program they have put together!

Copyright at London Westbank gallery

We managed to get down to the London Westbank gallery to attend the opening of “Thirteen”, the new Copyright solo show. We arrived quite early which was nice as people were still quite scarce so this enables us to take a good look at the impressive amount of pieces that got hung on the walls of the two level gallery.

Let’s face it, quite a few pieces weren’t new at all and were taken from past show and while some may argue that Copyright’s style stagnate (read The Art Collector full comment,), we still enjoyed the pin-up girls which often appear in Copyright pieces and are even some sort of signature.

One thing worth pointing out was the use of the actual stencils as pieces itself. Quite a few of the stencils the artist used for his works were indeed hung around the gallery and could be recognised by a sticky tape that sometimes said “Fragile” clumsily wrapping the cut out paper piece.

Armsrock at Signal gallery: “Drawn Towards The Present”

I knew very little about Armsrock before going to Signal gallery but I was pretty sure I would get to see something different, the sort of show where you feel you have a new experience.

Danish artist, Armsrock’s medium is charcoal and for his solo show he uses huge piece of rice paper. I stepped into Signal and looked up right away, immediately curtains of drawings appeared in front of me, suspended all around the gallery.
