“One of the reasons I source mainly from newspaper, television and internet imagery is because the way we interact with these media shapes so many of our opinions about the world around us. Most of what I know about the world has been drawn in a fairly disjointed and fragmentary fashion from this huge, seemingly ever present sea of information.

The sheer amount of available knowledge is so overwhelming that I end up feeling always frustrated that I know nothing about anything. Not knowing what I should be spending my time getting to know, I end up with a constant sense of only ever partially understanding even the most important current and historical events.

I am impelled by a great fascination but end up mostly confused about which direction to allow my fascination to lead me in the time I have. Although partial understanding can be frustrating and isolating, it does carry its own qualities. As events become jumbled and confused in our minds a kind of magical haze is thrown over everything. We start to create our own narratives, filling in the gaps between what we pick up from various sources with any number of unreliable memories and opinions.” Darren Nixon

Darren’s central theme of ‘not knowing’ brings up issues of ‘not remembering’ and when applied on a global scale, this “magical haze” created by the fragmented reality of media overload, threatens our formation of collective memories; memories we experience as part of a culture and a society, memories which connect our identity to the cultural experience of a larger social group.

In art since 1900, Benjamin Buchloh makes this encouraging statement in the final roundtable discussion, “The Predicament of Contemporary Art”: “…the effort to retain or to reconstruct the capacity to remember, to think historically, is one of the few acts that can oppose the almost totalitarian implementation of the universal laws of consumption…”

However, he concludes with this condemnation, “…to deliver the aesthetic capacity to construct memory images to the voracious demands of an apparatus that entirely lacks the ability to remember and to reflect historically, and to do so in the form of resuscitated myth, is an almost guaranteed route to success in the present art world, especially with its newly added wing of “the memory industry”. London Art Fair – artists we enjoyed, Matteo Massagrande

We strolled through the London Art Fair for the fourth consecutive year and as always stumbled upon remarkable artworks from ever so talented artists.

In this series, we will tell you why we liked a particular piece from these artists as well as posting more works. We hope you will also enjoy it as we did.

Matteo Massagrande

'Salice' by Matteo Massagrande | Art-PieWe stumbled upon the piece called “Salice” – mixed media on board, 80 x 120cm and instantly liked the smoky and hazy atmosphere of this piece achieved in using panels. It made us want to go and explore the scene that was presented in front of our eyes.

About the artist

Matteo Massagrande was born in Padua, Italy in 1959. Massagrande is an accomplished painter and a talented engraver. He has exhibited in over one hundred exhibitions internationally in the past 30 years.

Dublin Street Art

Espo | Art-PieWith some spare time available while on business recently in Dublin I had to put aside the Guinness and amazing Irish stew for a bit and not pass up the chance to check out what the streets had to offer.

The creative festival Offset had recently took place with international talent like JR and Faile taking the chance to add their mark to the streets and complement the local artists like Maser and James Earley. The festival birthed a collaboration effort between Maser and JR, while the duo of Faile hit the town at an impressive rate with a number of tags and stencils.

When in Dublin you can’t fail to visit Temple Bar for all its drinking establishments but it is also home to an excellent Conor Harrington piece down one of the areas quieter streets as well as a few galleries. A bit further a field is where you really find gold though and in the Tivoli Theatre car park is a range of work including a large number of pieces by Steve ‘Espo’ Powers and one from El Mac.

Dublin seems very receptive to street art and an initiative caught my eye called the Dublin City Beta project which first project has seen a number of traffic light boxes given an overhaul by a number of artists, with a forum to gather feedback on whether the art is good for the area.

A hub for the community is the shop All City, which stocks sprays cans, records and even has a spot to get a quick trim. Any time I visited this was a hot bed of activity with artists and DJ’s conversing while the weekend commencing my visit they were holding the annual All City Tivoli Jam.

I’m already looking forward to a return visits to see what more work has cropped up. Dublin is definitely worth a visit if you fancy your street art with a good craic.

Mehdi Ghadyanloo’s street art illusion

Meet Mehdi Ghadyanloo, a proficient street artist from Teheran, Israel.

The artist style is ‘illusion’ and his works always need you to look again and again to understand what it is all about but that illusional aspect is most definitely why so many people appreciate it.

Surreal scenes are often depicted in his murals such as a man floating up into the sky and holding on helium balloons.

Mehdi Ghadyanloo is a painter and designer based in Tehran, Israel. His street art is extensive. What makes his artworks particularly intriguing is that they are full of dimension that tricks the brain.
