Ronzo’s cockroaches and secret walls win
We bring you our encounter with Ronzo‘s secret walls appearance at Streefest, street culture festival showcasing live art, which happened last May in East London.
We have also included pics from the Whitecross street party whose Ronzo was one of the thirty artists taking part on the event. His now famous cockroach figure could be seen lurking on building roofs.

Missum (Miss Bugs) at Ink_d gallery
Missum, one half of street art sensation Miss Bugs is to exhibit her first ever solo work at Ink_d Gallery, Brighton.
Breaking onto the UK street art scene in 2007, the artistic partnership of Miss Bugs, Missum, has gained international acclaim, culminating in the recent sell-out Parlour show at the Brooklynite Gallery, New York.
For this solo show, 20 new works will be revealed where Missum’s unique approach using watercolours, collograph and drypoint etching techniques will be seen. Dark palette is often use but Missum’s style manage to give the works a softer touch, a Missum’s touch.
While we are excited about this show, Missum’s recent street art installations are as truly remarkable and again carry a certain softness. You can see two of them below.

‘Soviet Pin up’ by Valery Barykin
Erarta Galleries London is pleased to present Valery Barykin’s solo exhibition entitled ‘Soviet Pin-Up’.
The exhibition will feature a number of specially made, limited edition pieces. Barykin`s eyecatching prints are reminiscent of the celebrated 1940’s and 1950’s American pin-ups blended with Soviet Russian propaganda advertisements. Known for his unique style, Valery Barykin’s prints contrast the aesthetic of the beloved American Pin-Up culture and its heightened sexuality with the sharp-edged and saturated colours of Soviet Russia’s propaganda posters.
His upbringing was surrounded by socialist advertisements and mass-produced American pin-up photographs that slowly made their way
into Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. The women in his works often resemble Soviet Russian film stars such as Lyudmila Gurcgenko and Natalya Fateeva who are sometimes scantily clad and the object of attention.
Barykin displays his outrageously gorgeous and provocative women in unexpected everyday familiar situations as they enthusiastically continue to perform their stereotyped roles and female duties.

The nuclear bunker project by 3Dot gallery
We recently met up with the 3Dot gallery team to find out about the Nuclear Bunker project. The gallery is located in Edinburgh.
Art-Pie: “So guys, what is the Nuclear Bunker project all about“?
3Dot: We have graff, illustrator, stencil, projection and lighting artists coming in over the next few days to create some exceptional pieces of art that will completely transform Scotland’s “Secret Bunker”.
A-P: “Scotland Secret Bunker?”
3Dot: ???
A-P: “What the greater idea behind this project?”
3Dot: We believe the projects we do are quite special due to their nature with the hope that this one will be the turning point in the grander scheme of things.
Great artists have come together at our studio within the four weeks we have had to put this project together. They have come along to do what they are passionate about even though no-one is making any money, the budget is extremely tight in respect to the space we have to cover – everyone has been pitching in as much as they possibly can with materials and countless hours spent working and helping out
We are doing this to provide artists a platform to showcase their pieces and throw an awesome party to celebrate all the hard work from everyone involved, something that I don’t believe is actually happening at the moment in Edinburgh and all the artists we work with agree with us too.
A-P: “Where do you see this initiative take you?”
3Dot: We want to keep doing these events so that we can establish ourselves and gain a reputation that we can use to gain a credible charity status that will develop our ability to provide extremely talented artists with materials, studio space and a venue to showcase their work – All of which would be costly and could deter these creative individuals from doing what they do best.
The first event of the Nuclear Bunker project will take place this Saturday 2nd Februrary 2013 at ???. We will report back on it and show you some of the creations that came out of it. We have included below a teaser of the artwork that have already been produced by some of the artists involved.

The very evocative Victor Lundy’s sketchbook
We were instantly moved when we looked at Victor Lundy’s sketchbook.
The quality of the drawings is impressive and the story behind them heart breaking : Victor Lundy’s documented his time in the army and fighting in the second world war.
We appreciate the soft yet very efficient touch in Lundy’s drawings. We feel that his drawings were done in one sitting, no erasing but a driving hand screen printing, if you like, what his eyes recorded.

A ‘natural-born’ skilled individual
We learned that Victor Lundy was born in New York City in 1923 and very young, he showed some artistic skills which will lead him to attend New York University to study architecture, specialising in the Beaux Arts style.
A will to help post-war
Lundy did not have to be involved with war but the thought of doing his bit in rebuilding Europe once World War II was over was very strong, so much so that he voluntarily joined the Army and very quickly ended up at the very forefront of the action.
This is at that time where he would capture any faces, scenes or moments in his sketchbook.

Lego Terracota Army comes to life
Take two thing a large number of us have manipulated once in their lives: LEGO and chalk. Take it further and create something too amazing for not writing something up about it. Dutchman Peter Westerink and a few other helping hands must have astonished a few by-passers with their 100m2 3D creation depicting a army of LEGO men Terracotta style.
You will see below, pictures showing the steps these guys has to go through. Oh and did I mention that it took 6 full days to a crew of four artists (Leon Keer, who also came up with the design, Remko Van Schaik, Ruben Poncia and Peter Westerink) to get this leaped out if the concrete floor. No surprise that the Sarasota Chalk Festival in Florida was chosen, imagine doing that at Glastonbury festival where it is very likely to rain and wash out a pile of efforts.
A grid is first laid out using chalk, then painted over with white paint before being removed and a mammoth task begins: filling.

Remi/Rough and Steve More at Blackall studios: urban abstract
Remi/Rough and Steve More are leading a new school of post-graffiti artists and this will be the first UK exhibition to showcase the movement.
A is an exhibition at the forefront of an urban abstract movement whose roots come from a time before the hype of street art. Flying eyeball exhibition & pop up show – Gallery 27
I got a flyer telling me about that exhibition – ‘Flying Eyeball presents Exhibition & Pop Up Shop’ when I went to the Lock Up exhibition last week (will post about it soon). I looked again at the flyer and after reading the artists line-up, Goldie, Ben Allen, Shok 1, etc. I could not wait but to be there.
On my way now with a friend to the Gallery 27, based in Mayfair. As I was trying to find my way (I lost the map I had printed earlier) I looked around to see only shops selling very expensive things or people in impeccable suits. I then thought, why Mayfair? An old looking and smelly warehouse in Dalston would surely suit a lot more that sort of exhibition (Dalston, Shoreditch – trendy spots, everyone knows that and agree) but I quickly realised that no actually Mayfair is spot on and is a sign of what Street Art has become and where it stands today in the vast contemporary art world: it is everywhere and appreciate by more and more people everyday.
I am actually pretty sure some of these people if not at least one (in impeccable suits) I stumbled across tonight may actually have thought or event bought a reproduction of a Banksy’s piece which is now hung in their study or in the loo. We need to give a bit more time though to see that piece hung on the living room next to a Rembrandt or a Monet, let’s be realistic.
I am now in the gallery and my first thought is asking whether I can take pictures (to post on this blog!) as I glance at that piece from Goldie right to the left when you come in. The girl I asked was having her takeaway and had to ask the manager who was downstairs who also got a takeaway but had to… anyway to make it short, I was allowed.
