When asking Leo Rocha about making striking images to publicise Ecuador and its tourism, I wonder whether the tourism board of this country knew that they were in for a treat! The winner of the 2012 Catlin Art Prize is Julia Vogl, a 2011 graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London. She is the sixth winner of the annual Catlin Art Prize, a competition showcasing the work of recent graduates of UK art schools.
Julia Vogl won the 2012 Catlin Art Prize for her ‘social sculpture’titled ‘Let’s Hang Out’. The work invites visitors to create a communal area by selecting and affixing coloured carpet titles that colour-correspond with Julia’s suggestions of various pastimes (such as ‘call Mum’, ‘tweet’, etc.). The work will evolve throughout the duration of the Catlin Art Prize exhibition while encouraging visitors to interact – and hang out.”
The official comments on the Art Catlin website confirming the recipient of the £5,000 award, now it its 6th year.
The exhibition showcasing the finalists of the artists compiled in the Catlin Guide was hosted at the Londonnewcastle project space and in my opinion was laid out and staged to create an explorative feeling when entering.
Before hearing the winner I was one of the first people to interact with Julia’s “lets hang out” and felt that for me this was quite rightly a centre piece, seemingly the concensus as it turned out.
In addition to film and other mixed media work the next most enjoyable piece was marbles and sand staged in one of the corners of the show. A mystical and engaging feeling from starting at the work and felt very much similar to my own thoughts on moments in time.
The second piece which was a stuffed horse on its back clamping on to a made object. This was very striking but wasted on me.
The guide is fast becoming as much a tool for collectors as it is for the artworld in showcasing talent and clamouring for the prize.

We have come across La Pandilla art and have liked very much the uniqueness of it. The recurrent theme it’d seem is the animal morphology: different species of animals are blended together creating totally unique specimens.
Definitely odd at first, this approach appears powerful and give the viewer plenty to think of what and why we look the way we are. You will find a few examples of their work below.

With the new body of work, French embraces modern technologies, and although each image is drawn from life and inspired by the people and events he observes, he uses his iPhone and iPad to maintain the visual diaries that form the basis of his oeuvre.

I think we mentioned before that sculpture is a form of art, here at Art-Pie, which we enjoy more and more as we stumble upon yet another great artist like Jed Malitz
We appreciate when artists think twice about what they want to produce or achieve and put loads of thoughts in it. But hold on, we also want and like artists to be conquerors of beauty in art and only brushing the canvas to get the perfect picture, to get the perfect colour blend which will trigger emotions for the viewers
Back to Jed Malitx – creates life-size glass sculptures of human figures within architectural forms.
The New Orleans-based artist describes his works as “4D sculptures of cut glass and refracted light,” illustrating how each subject is defined both physically and non-physically through glass silhouettes and their refracted light.
The silhouettes, which are based on live-subject 3D photography, suggest the physical outlines of people through holes cut into architectural glass panels. What’s even more amazing, however, is the alternative perspective of the subject that’s revealed when viewing the sculpture from a slightly different angle.
Redirected ambient light from the silhouettes projects an additional human form on the outer edges of the glass panels, creating a ghostly twin that appears even more detailed and realistic than the solid silhouette.
Malitz, who has an extensive background in math and science, dubs these one-of-a-kind sculptures “windows into souls” for their ability to expose concealed dimensions.
He says, “These forms are made entirely of redirected light, do not physically exist, and reveal otherwise hidden perspectives of their subjects. The entire subjects in cut glass thus project their entire hidden selves as pure light, in essence, revealing their souls.”
Extinction/Extension by the half-Chilean half-German street artist Otto Schade known as OSCH is opening tomorrow at London West Bank gallery.
In the meantime, the private view of the show is tonight between 6-10pm.
As the Anonymous sunset image shows, Osch will work on his signature tape style combined with his sunsets which have covered London and other cities in the past year.
The artist will be releasing 2 very low edition hand-finished Anonymosch prints during the show and there will be a giveaway of 10 posters (image below) to the first 10 fans through the door.
Here is what OSCH says about the show –
‘AnonymOsch’ came about for a couple of reasons. When we were putting together my latest solo show I had to come up with a name that meant something to me! I decided on the show being named ‘Extinction Extension’. Followers of my work will know that I try to highlight the futility of war and also the fragile plight of many of our endangered species. These guys at anonymous try very much to do the same thing in their own kind of way.They have started a global movement that is growing by the day.
He adds –
Although I don’t agree with everything that they highlight, a lot of what they convey makes perfect sense. My ‘Orb’ body of works do not pertain to anywhere in the world in particular, but rather everywhere where there is conflict. ‘AnonymOSCH’ is a hybrid artwork that utilises the impact of the simplistic Orb and also encompasses my trademark ribbon style. The face of Anonymous was taken from the ‘V is for Vendetta’ movie, although originally (as I am led to believe) was manufactured as a Guy Fawkes mask.
When Anonymous Chapter One, London commissioned the drawing from me I jumped at the chance as it was an image that I had been toying with for quite some time.
